Friday 31

Time.

Across the evening sky, all the birds are leaving
But how can they know it's time for them to go?
Before the winter fire, I will still be dreaming
I have no thought of time
For who knows where the time goes?
Who knows where the time goes?
Sad, deserted shore, your fickle friends are leaving
Ah, but then you know it's time for them to go
But I will still be here, I have no thought of leaving
I do not count the time
For who knows where the time goes?
Who knows where the time goes?
And I am not alone while my love is near me
I know it will be so until it's time to go
So come the storms of winter and then the birds in spring again
I have no fear of time
For who knows how my love grows?
And who knows where the time goes?

...between 1945, when he was enjoying his first great success with ''The Glass Menagerie,'' and 1957, when he was preparing ''Sweet Bird of Youth,'' Williams composed nearly all the plays by which he is likely to be remembered (including ''A Streetcar Named Desire,'' ''Camino Real'' -- still, I think, undervalued -- and ''Cat on a Hot Tin Roof'') as well as a novel and numberless short stories, poems and essays.

To understand how this was possible, you have to grasp two things about Williams: he was unshakably romantic about the importance of writing, of recording in lyrical language whatever he knew about the perversities of the human condition, and he was an intractably gallant and utterly fearless man. So, virtually every morning of his life -- no matter how hung over, how lacking in inspiration or how distracted he was -- he confronted his typewriter and wrote (or, often as not, rewrote). ''Bill Inge said to me, Tenn, don't you feel that you are blocked as a writer?'' he wrote in one letter. ''I told him that I had always been blocked as a writer but that my desire to write had always been so strong that it broke through the block.'' He also wrote, ''There are so many things I want to do, no end of them!'' It was only when something interfered with his daily chipping away at that vast agenda that he was truly miserable.

Williams wrote, ''If the sorrow and confusion and longing in a man's heart is eloquently expressed through art, I think it gives comfort and even exaltation to his audience, by making them feel less lonely.''

No Bulletin. In church this morning, we had no bulletin. I wonder what the history of the church Sunday bulletin is? Anyhow:

John Waters and. Catchy and Rare; a John Water's Christmas on Fresh Air/NPR last week.

Today an artist friend challenges us:

One of your main assignments in 2005 is to cultivate your sense of wonder. It's true that you already possess a more acutely developed sensitivity to marvels and miracles than most of the other astrological signs, but you still have a way to go to reach your highest potential. With this in mind, I'll ask you to make 52 appointments with yourself in the coming year. They could be at noon every Monday, or whatever time you choose. During each meeting, you will renew your commitment to seeing with fresh eyes. You'll vow to be alert for previously unnoticed delights lurking in the midst of your familiar surroundings. You'll promise yourself to seek out experiences that teach you things you don't know

    And more music here:

All in all a rather strange day; I am not depressed; simply thinking---years past on a night like tonight I would be sitting in a dark room at Birch Lane, glass of wine in hand; all but the white Christmas tree lights aglow.

Tonight I watch my few ornaments hang from the yucca plant and listen to Maria Callas. But they, too, these red and green and golden ornaments sparkle.

Strange being alone: without my children in the same place; without my dog; without a wife.

This is truly a Christmas unlike any other. In one sense it takes on a much more spiritual meaning.

And what's this thinking of New York City? I do not know but I am excited about having my first portrait job there in the next few weeks.

    Tuesday 21

Me.  I was searching my name on Google today and found a discussion about me here. Oh, and there is the recently published interview with my brother. This was after I attended the weekly BNI meeting were I got a referral and then later I received this e-mail:

    Bruce,

Even as you read this, a frame is wrapped and under the tree with a note that says, "Your lovely face here" along with a description of what I found......I am confident she will admire your work.  I'm a tad less confident that she will want to have a sitting, although your method sounds relaxed and easy......Your prices are good......My goal is to act quickly......Meanwhile, enjoy the holidays, snow and changeable weather.

This is my first New York City portrait job from advertising at New York City Social Diary.

And the prints made from my first family portrait were printed today and they look great. Not one they selected, but one I like:

They took a color version of this one.

Evening found me at a holiday party in Eastworks at VISIBL where I met some new friends and many other interesting people, including Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon.  I even got a free issue of GUM.

And looked for my Holiday Cards from last year. And this one:

    Monday 20

Thinking of Willem de Kooning. Thinking of de Kooning because I'd rather think of him then the snow; I awoke to find five to six inches of new snow on my car early this morning--I no longer have a garage.

There was good news today: writing in her journal, a friend recommend my sites to her friends saying "Bruce's photographs make me believe there is  God."

There was also bad news today: Chelsea Harvell, one of the 19 @ 19, suffered a stroke Saturday night. She is currently in the hospital and being treated. An internet friend got to talk to her on the phone today and she sounded like her lovely self, but very worn out! She has already been through MRI's and CAT scans, so please send her only your good thoughts and hope that she recovers quickly! May Peace and Love be with her.

Today the world marks the anniversary of Ludwig Van Beethoven's birth in 1770.Years ago, but not too many years ago, when my daughter played the Moonlight Sonata at Edwards Church in Northampton, Massachusetts, at the corner of State and Main, one joyous Sunday morning, many people in the congregation--young and old--cried
