"There is only you and your camera.

Loss And Gain.

When I compare
What I have lost with what I have gained,
What I have missed with what attained,
Little room do I find for pride.

I am aware
How many days have been idly spent;
How like an arrow the good intent
Has fallen short or been turned aside.

But who shall dare
To measure loss and gain in this wise?
Defeat may be victory in disguise;
The lowest ebb is the turn of the tide.

~Henry Longfellow, "Loss and Gain"

Meditation is like a single log of wood.
Insight and investigation are one end of the log;
calm and concentration are the other end.
If you lift up the whole log,
both sides come up at once.
Which is concentration and which is insight?
Just this mind.

Monday 18

Confidence.

The longer you stand at the edge,
the more nervous you seem...
As for what you're actually
hearing this morning: think twice
before you tell anyone what was said in this field
and by whom.

-- Louise Gluck

I can't wait for the contestants to see the photographs from the Ms Jr. Teen America Pageant. Worked all day on them. CDs out this week (three per contestant--I think; Friday, Saturday, Sunday--it is simply too hard to narrow these down so they will each get close to 700 images). And then on Friday I will put the website slideshow up--that will be fun to watch.

Adding more here as I edit over next two days:

I went for a walk. I turned around and:

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

By Rumi, Translation by Coleman Barks

What lies behind us and what lies before us
are small matters compared to what lies within us.
"

Do not go where the path may lead.
Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.
"

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done with it what you could. Some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense."

It's Free: How To Be Happy.

In other news, today I learned an about an internet friend dying in a horrible crash in California. I have been thinking for hours about the words to write here; she wasn't a close LJ friend but her and her girlfriend were friends of mine nonetheless and all I seem to recall tonight sitting here in my loft are photographs of the two of them: photographs illustrating a beautiful friendship, unconditional love, joy, a wonder for life and living it to its fullest--when I opened LJ and saw them, their photographs, I felt love in its truest sense and found peace in their joy, their love, their laughter. Today, I read that one of these young women died in a horrible and fiery car crash in California just a few short weeks ago. A car approached her in the wrong lane. She was 21. Yes, I cried today. Life is short and unpredictable. Love your friends and neighbors. It is all about love.

Sunday 10

Back to The Lower Mill Pond. Meditation seems to be working.

Saturday 09

Dinner with David. What a wonderful evening: David treated me to dinner at Tavern on The Hill in Easthampton; we had a charming "server," Erin, who had a beautiful and friendly smile; and I ran into Sandra from church. We were fortunate and sat outside on the deck which provided us with a spectacular view of the valley from which mist rose--and later, soon before the sun set, a rainbow appeared. I had Clams Casino and a chicken breast wrapped in bacon and stuffed with Gouda cheese. It was a long and leisurely dinner punctuated with laughter and engaging conversation.
